AKRON
18-year-old hit
AKRON: Police say an 18-year-old from Akron was attacked on Talbot Street at Lovers Lane Friday night.
The victim told investigators that three men began “harassing him about not living in the area” around 10 p.m.
When he tried to walk way, police say, the men “approached him from behind, grabbed him, hit him in the face with a handgun, and told him to empty his pockets.”
After the victim told his attackers that he didn’t have any money, police say, the three men continued to hit and kick him until he became unconscious.
The victim had to be hospitalized. Police did not disclose the extent of his injuries.
Stick attack
AKRON: Police say a 19-year-old Akron man was robbed as he walked in the area of East Glenwood Avenue and Patterson Avenue early Saturday.
The victim told investigator that a black Ford Explorer pulled up next to him around 1 a.m. and five to six men got out and began hitting him in the head with a stick.
The victim told police that when he regained consciousness, he was missing $15.
Victim shot
AKRON: An Akron man was shot early Saturday during a robbery.
Police say a 28-year-old suffered a gunshot wound around 12:45 a.m. when a robber entered a home on 22nd Street Southwest.
Police say a robber in all-black clothing and a mask entered through an unlocked door and demanded money and drugs from the victim and another man in the home.
Police say the intruder shot the man and then took money, marijuana and a handgun from the residence. Police did not disclose the extent of the victim’s injuries.
Man shot in knee
AKRON: Police responding to calls of shots fired about 3:45 a.m. Sunday in the area of Noah Avenue and Fried Street didn’t have to look far for their victim.
Police say officers followed the screams and discovered a Noah Avenue man using a garden hose to treat a bullet wound to the shin.
Police say the victim has refused to cooperate with investigators.
Police standoff
AKRON: Police say an Akron man threatened to kill his girlfriend and her father Sunday night and then held police at bay.
Officers were called around 7 p.m. to the 800 block of East Crosier Street for a reported domestic dispute.
When officers arrived, David Harrell, 37, was on the porch with the victims.
Harrell is accused of running into the house and grabbing a knife.
A negotiator had to be brought in to talk him into surrendering, police said.
Harrell was taken to the hospital for treatment of self-inflicted cuts. Charges are pending.
Ward 10 meeting
AKRON: Ward 10 Councilwoman Kelli Crawford will have a ward meeting at 6:30 tonight at the Goodyear Branch, Akron-Summit County Public Library, 60 Goodyear Blvd.
Deputy Director of Economic Development Bob Bowman will discuss the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. headquarters and other projects.
BARBERTON SCHOOLS
Levy attempt
BARBERTON: Residents will face an 8.74-mill emergency school levy on the November ballot.
The five-year levy request approved by the school board Monday night will generate $3.5 million a year. School officials said the money is needed to avoid a $1 million deficit by June 2013.
The levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home about $268 a year or $22.30 a month.
The last time the school district asked for a new levy was in 2005.
COLUMBUS
Farms preserved
COLUMBUS: The Ohio Department of Agriculture will spend $6.4 million to preserve 41 farms across Ohio.
The purchases with Clean Ohio Funds includes a 72-acre farm in Portage County and two farms totaling 391 acres in Wayne County.
Ohio is buying agricultural easements on the 41 farms to make sure they remain as farms.
Since 2000, Ohio has earmarked $25 million to fund the Clean Ohio Agricultural Easement Purchase Program.
CUYAHOGA VALLEY
Engine coming
A historic steam engine is coming to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in September.
The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad announced Monday that the Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 Berkshire No. 765 will arrive Sept. 9 for a visit, with additional steam activities scheduled later in September.
The engine, built in 1944, is the largest operating locomotive in the East. It is 15 feet tall, weighs 404 tons and can travel 60 miles per hour. It is owned by the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society.
Activities include two-hour round trips in the Cuyahoga Valley on Sept. 10, 11, 24 and 25, Total Track Tours on Sept. 17 and 18, a dinner train Sept. 23, an evening photo shoot Sept. 17 and other events.

GREEN
Focus on future
GREEN: A citywide meeting to inform residents about what’s happening in Green will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 30 in City Council Chambers, 1755 Town Park Blvd.
Hosted by Councilman-at-large and Council President Joel Reed and Ward 4 Councilman John “Skip” Summerville, the meeting will feature information on Akron-Canton Airport, a vision for Green development and the ongoing parks expansion of Summit County’s immense trail system.
Reed and Summerville will speak, along with Kristie Van Auken, senior vice president and chief marketing and communications officer at the airport; Green Planning Director Wayne Wiethe; and David Whited, chief of planning and development for the Akron Metro Parks.
Refreshments will be served, beginning at 6:45 p.m. Council members will take questions to end the program.
PERRY TOWNSHIP
Marine killed
PERRY TWP.: The Department of Defense announced Monday that a Marine sergeant from Stark County was killed Saturday in Afghanistan.
Daniel J. Patron, 26, was killed while trying to defuse a roadside bomb in the Helmand province.
He was assigned to the 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Cancer support
FAIRLAWN: The Man to Man Prostate Cancer Support and Education Group is holding its next meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Stewart’s Caring Place, 2955 W. Market St., Fairlawn.
Dr. Dennis Bentley from the Physicians Urology Group will be the guest speaker.
The meeting is free and open to the public.
